Hi All Well I have had to go to the doctors today to get my blood test results and not good. I know that I suffer with Guilberts Sydrome but then now he said that my liver is still not how it should be. The count should be betwen 10 and 34 and mine is 56. He is keeping a close eye on my count and wants to do more tests in 2 months and he said he hopes it will even itself out. He asked me if I drank alot of alchol which I do have a drink but not a great amount. I tend to have a drink more when I go out. He said the most I drink that would not cause the problems but its something that needs investigatiing further. Shell xx |

Here you go Katie. What is Gilbert's Syndrome? Gilbert's Syndrome is a harmless condition involving the liver, caused by the liver’s handling of the yellow pigment 'bilirubin' properly. Haemoglobin is a chemical in the red cells that carries oxygen to the tissues. One of the breakdown products of haemoglobin is called bilirubin. An enzyme called UDB Glucuronyl Transferase which helps the body get rid of Bilirubin. Gilbert's syndrome is a genetic disorder which means that there is a slight deficiency of this enzyme. When there is less enzyme than normal, levels of Bilirubin increase in the blood and the person may notice jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes). This jaundice may become more pronounced when the person is stressed, either physically or mentally. Thus, jaundice may develop when the person becomes ill with an infection or when stressed, for example when taking an exam. Gilbert's is often diagnosed in the late teens and early twenties. The condition is inherited and is relatively common being estimated to affect about 1 person in 20. Men are often affected more than women. The condition usually has no symptoms although some people do complain of stomach pains. It isn't known to lead to any other kind of disease and it doesn't affect the length of life. There are no specific treatments. Gilbert's syndrome is usually detected because of mild jaundice, or because slightly abnormal liver tests are noted when blood tests are performed for unrelated reasons. It is important to make the diagnosis so that the person can be reassured and serious liver disease excluded as a possibility. The diagnosis can often be made on the basis of simple blood tests. All the liver tests should be normal apart from the serum bilirubin, which is increased. Different blood tests may need to be carried out, if there are other symptoms. These will look for other reasons that the levels of bilirubin might be raised, such as other undiagnosed liver diseases. It is only rarely that a liver biopsy is necessary. In some cases more specific tests may be needed to confirm the diagnosis and this should be discussed with your specialist. |

Oh Shell poor you Hopefully your doctor can get to the bottom of what the problem is with your liver and it can be fixed easily. What is the next step for you? Do you have to go back to the doctors? Clare xx |

Shell, sorry just seen this, not the results you wanted. Did the gp suggest how you can get the levels down, or are they going to wait and try again in 1-2 months,?? Get out there and enjoy your weekend of dancing. |

To be honest he asked how much beer I drank and then he went on to say that it would not be the beer intake that is causing it. He just said its higher then it shoud be and wants to monitor. There is nothing I can do to bring the count down I did ask yesterday, just have to carry on as normal. I will certainly have a boogie tomorrow night. Love Shell xx |

Sorry to hear your blood tests didnt come back as expected Shell. I hope in 2 months the results are better. In the meantime just try and cut out the drink, i know you dont drink much but will be good to see if cutting out the drink helps bring your count down. x
