Default Eye Hospital

Louise had been under the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre since she was born.

We have been putting it off a little bit, but Louise is going to have surgery on her right eye to try and correct a squint.

They are going to do surgery on 2 muscles, she will just be in as a day case. Already been given a date of 18th October. All the paperwork has been done, pre op questions and consent form etc.

I have been told that the surgery might not be 100% successful but may correct it enough to make it less obvious. The operation is on a Monday and she will need to take the rest of the week off school and I think the half-term week is after then, so she will have an extra long holiday.

Had a visit to the ward where she'll be etc and spoke to one of the nurses there and they seem really nice. She said if I get a letter for an appointment for the pre-op, then I should give them a ring and tell them we've already had it done.

Just need to sort out taking time off etc and Charlotte will probably stay over at my Mom's and they will take her to school. We have to report to the hospital at 7.30am.

Hi Heather,

I am so glad that they are hopefully going to sort this out and hope she will be ok after she's had it done. How does she seem about going into hospital? its a big thing for our children but I am sure once she's had it done she will be fine.

You must keep us updated

Yeah we have spoken to her about it and she was asking lots of questions, like "will Mommy be there and will it hurt" etc.

We are going to talk to her gradually about it as it's quite a way off yet. Hopefully she will be ok about it by the time she goes goes in. Easier said than done, I know.

Heather, it is positive that you have a date and that she is going in for an operation.

It is hard on the parents as your child goes down to theatre (not been there myself but Nikki and Shell have) so i am sure they will help with any post op/pre op questions.

Big step forward , great they take steps to try and correct it. and its a date you can aim towards.

I know what you mean Karolyn.

She had some surgery done on her eyes before when she was a few weeks old (laser surgery), it was to do with the oxygen she'd been on. As she was in the neonatal unit at Walsall Manor, she had to get transferred to the Children's Hospital. They transferred her in an ambulance and we just got a call to say she'd arrived at the Children's, but we didn't actually see her go into Theatre. They phoned us to say she'd gone into Theatre, so we went up and were there for when she came out. She was on the high dependency unit for a while and it was quite bad, there was girl that had had heart surgery in the next bed and you could see how upset her family were.

I think it will be worse this time as she will be aware of everything and us being there and of course she'll be upset.

Well tomorrow is the day of the operation.

We have to be at the hospital at 7.30am Lee is going to drop me and Louise at the hospital and then drop Charlotte at the school club.

Louise can't eat or drink anything after midnight, so I imagine she will be starving in the morning.

She has to take the rest of the week off school and I have one of the Moms and my parents helping out with dropping off and picking up Charlotte, so I don't have to drag Louise up the school. Next week is half term as well, so Louise will be getting an extra long holiday.

Will let you know how it all goes.
